Piero Fornasetti Rare Vintage 'Mongolfiere' Waste Paper Basket, Milan, Italy, 1960s.
This is a very rare original 1960s Piero Fornasetti waste paper basket / bin with the famous hot air balloons - the 'Mongolfiere' design by famous Italian artist Piero Fornasetti (1913-1988). Fornasetti designed a lot of beautiful and whimsical scenes, but his hot air balloons are among his most iconic works. From his childhood, Piero Fornasetti was fascinated by hot air balloons and this resulted in him using these wonderous air travel machines in his work. He truly built a world of his own and his works are as iconic as they are recognisable. When viewed up close, the genius of his works is obvious with many strange and fascinating details. His company Fornasetti used the 'Mongolfiere' theme on a range of items from their catalogue.
This waste paper basket / bin is a wonderful example of his ability to turn practical everyday items into works of art. Also the quality of the materials used and the execution are of a very high standard, making this a real gem in your interior - or a very interesting collection piece. Since there are not many of these original baskets left, this is more of a museum piece than a household item - but at the same time it could be used perfectly fine.
This very basket has been made in the 1960s and therefore is a very early piece - which is important in the world of Fornasetti. It comes in a very original condition with wear and marks consistent with 60 years of use. Also, the brass rims have aged beautifully. This unique patination adds a lot of character to the piece. A truly rare item indeed. Signed at the base - Fornasetti Milano with his famous logo.
