Wim Ypma Rare Avant Garde Floor Lamp for A. Polak Amsterdam, Netherlands, 1950s.
This is a very rare Wim Ypma floor lamp made for Abraham Polak, Amsterdam in 1956 or 1957. It comes directly from a private family and has never been on the market before. It is hard to imagine how modern and striking this slender floor lamp in metal, acrylic and brass must have looked in 1956 - a time when floor lamps looked completely different and most households still lived with very traditional furniture. This lamp must have been a true statement piece and something which looked like it came from the future. Even now in the 21st century this lamp looks surprisingly modern. A true modernist lamp, which was - and still - is a conversation piece in any room.
We believe there only was a very small production in terms of quantity, because this was a niche product and a very modern and daring one at that.
The lamp is composed out of a slender metal stem on a striking looking tripod base with beautiful little feet in patinated brass. These feet are very decorative, but are also meant to level the lamp in order to get it standing exactly straight up. The light itself can be found behind a piece of acrylic, which was a very modern and avant garde material back then.
The lamp comes in a good vintage condition with a desirable patination on the metal and brass surfaces. It still has the original - very beautiful - switch. Please note there is a dent to be found in the metal, but this is not very visible at all. We are sure this can be sorted by a craftsman, but we chose not to do anything about it for we like the originality of the lamp.
